The Colour of Sugar belongs to the chapter entitled The Long Journey, which reflects on the weight and great importance of Africanness in the shaping of Cuban identity. Cuba cannot be understood without the heritage of its enslaved people. Their beliefs and legacy permeate Cuban society at all levels.
In The Colour of Sugar, I reflect on the process of slavery, the people who were enslaved in Cuba, and the economic and social system that justified and sustained slave practices. It is a society that grew, developed, and enriched itself through slavery, building a wealthy bourgeoisie sustained by sugar.
In this part of the work, I have used archival documentary material, real objects used in slave practices, as well as staged representations of concepts related to sugar production.
