Brazil is the country with the highest number of transgender murders in the world. In 2024, 122 people were killed, according to the National Association of Transvestites and Transsexuals of Brazil (ANTRA). According to statistics from Transgender Europe’s Trans Murder Monitoring (TMM) Project, 50% of crimes against the transgender population worldwide are committed in Brazil.
Most trans women in Brazil enter sex work at a very young age. They leave the school system prematurely, and family and social rejection leads them into a vicious cycle of marginalisation. They approach adult trans women to find out what they need to do to change their appearance, and, fascinated by a false sense of glamour, they look to them as role models and mentors.
One of the problems faced by transgender women in Brazil is body modification. Many lack financial resources when they begin their physical transition and are forced to resort to injections of industrial liquid silicone, which is not fit for human use. This leads to serious health problems and even death. The silicone hardens, causing physical deformities, and migrates to other parts of the body, resulting in large tumour-like lumps. In many cases, these procedures are carried out without any medical supervision.
