An Island on Escape is a project that explores the prolonged economic and social collapse of Cuba, a crisis that has been building for decades and was accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. During this period, the country has experienced the largest migratory exodus since 1959, surpassing the three previous major waves. The result is a nation depleted in human capital and marked by a growing sense of abandonment.
The project follows the stories of people who have emigrated, others who are in the process of leaving the country, those who have been deported, as well as children whose parents live outside of Cuba. Through these narratives, it addresses the phenomenon of exile and its serious consequences for the country within the context of the economic and social collapse the island is undergoing.
Furthermore, the work delves into the emotional and psychological impact on Cuban society. Hopelessness permeates everyday life in a country marked by a double void: the physical one, caused by emigration, and the symbolic one, stemming from the difficulty of imagining a possible future. Added to this is the pain of separated families and the strain imposed by the hardships of daily life.
In the current context, the blockade imposed by Donald Trump on oil imports has led to economic paralysis and has accelerated the collapse in Cuba, pushing the country toward a potential humanitarian crisis.
