Unlike other Muslim countries, Turkey does not prohibit homosexuality or transgender identity. Istanbul has long been a welcoming city for members of the LGBTI community from Muslim countries where they were persecuted; however, since Erdoğan came to power, he has violently suppressed any demonstrations related to the LGBTI community. Transgender people are the most vulnerable within this group and the most exposed to severe family and social stigma.

The vast majority of transgender people earn a living through sex work, where they also face high levels of violence. Many of them report brutal assaults by clients, who humiliate, beat, and even attack them with knives.
