Bye Bye Tarlabasi

Bye Bye Tarlabasi

Report on the gentrification of the central district of Tarlabaşı in Istanbul and the process of forced evictions and real estate harassment suffered by its inhabitants, mostly Kurdish and Roma communities.

In the spring of 2013, the city of Istanbul was engulfed in widespread protests, triggered by government plans under Erdoğan to build a new commercial complex in the central Gezi Park, in Taksim Square. The threat to this small park was merely the tip of a larger iceberg: a grand-scale urban development and privatisation project involving common goods such as forests, water resources, public spaces, and the demolition of entire neighbourhoods.
