However, with the approval in 1992 of a law allowing the free practice of religious cults, the number of followers increased significantly. In the last ten years, there has been a boom in the number of people from all social, economic, and cultural backgrounds who, for different reasons, seek support in these practices and beliefs.
In a country where many Cubans feel abandoned and let down by a government that is unable to respond to the many problems faced by its citizens, these religions provide a sense of protection and support to their members.
