Nuria López Torres

Nuria López Torres is a documentary photographer based in Barcelona. She trained at the Institute of Photographic Studies of Catalonia and the IDEP School of Image and Design in Barcelona, where she completed a master’s degree in photojournalism.

Her work focuses on themes related to human rights, women, identities and violence, with a particular emphasis in recent years on the social challenges facing developed societies. She approaches these themes from a social anthropological perspective, turning some of her work into photographic essays. Her work has been published in national and international media outlets such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, El País Semanal, El Magazine La Vanguardia, XL Semanal, Yo Dona, Marie Claire, Gatopardo, GQ, Le Monde, CNN, The Guardian, Al-Jazeera, The Sunday Business Post, Newsweek Japan, GEO and Terra Mater, amongst others.

She works mainly in Latin America, although she has also carried out projects in Morocco, Iran, Turkey, Senegal, Mozambique, India and Ukraine.

For the past twenty years, she has been working on a long-term project on Cuba entitled “The Island”, in which she explores different aspects of Cuban society and culture, and the changes they have undergone, organised by theme and chapter. She is the author of the book “Sex and Revolution in Cuba”.

Her work has been exhibited at the Mexican Senate, the Austrian Parliament, the Palau Robert in Barcelona, the Querétaro Art Museum in Mexico, the Museo América in Madrid, the Pablo Serrano Museum of Contemporary Art and Culture in Aragon, the North Fork Arts Centre in New York, the Spanish Embassy in Cuba, the London Photo Festival, the Dutch Embassy in Cuba, the F3 Freiraum für Fotografie Art Gallery in Berlin, Angar-7 in Austria, the Whitebox Gallery in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Michael Horbach Foundation in Germany, the Museum of Fine Arts in Castellón, the MAC Ibirapuera Museum in São Paulo (Brazil), the Spanish Cultural Centre, Lima (Peru), the Rojas Cultural Centre, Buenos Aires (Argentina), the Spanish Cooperation Centre, Antigua (Guatemala), the San Carlos Academy, Mexico City, the Hardcore Art Gallery, Miami (USA), the Spanish Cultural Centre, Asunción (Paraguay), Caja Madrid Barcelona, and the Círculos de Bellas Artes in Madrid, amongst many other exhibition spaces.
